HISTORY
The Madagascar commemorative medal (French: Médaille commémorative de Madagascar) was a French commemorative medal issued to the participants to the First Madagascar expedition in 1883, and the Second Madagascar expedition in 1894–95. Two different medals were issued, the first one by the law of 31 July 1886, the second one by the law of 15 January 1896.
The first expedition ended on December 17, 1885, with the signing of a treaty between the French and Queen Ranavalona III, recognizing the queen's sovereignty over the entire island in exchange for the imposition of a French protectorate and the cession of the bay of Diégo-Suarez. However, the implementation of this agreement posed many problems and led to ten years of unrest.
For these reasons, in December 1894, the French government sent back a new expeditionary force. The capital, Tananarive, was taken on September 28, 1895.
On October1, a treaty imposing a French protectorate over the whole of Madagascar was signed. To commemorate these events and reward the soldiers, sailors, Senegalese auxiliaries and Kabyles who took part in the second expedition, from December 8, 1894 to December 31, 1895, the law of January 15, 1896 instituted the Médaille commémorative de Madagascar, deuxième expédition (Madagascar Commemorative Medal, Second Expedition). The law of July 21, 1897 extended the award to soldiers and sailors who had been part of the Madagascar occupation corps between January1, 1896 and October 31, 1896
